Your first job in Bengaluru: a renter's field notes
It is 1 a.m. in a hostel room and the offer letter is three weeks old. The batch WhatsApp group has split into city factions, the "Bangalore folks?" thread is forty messages deep, and you are hunting flats in a city you have never stood in, on a phone, between a joining date and a semester's worth of goodbyes. Everyone in that thread is about to make the same first decision with the same missing information: which neighbourhood, chosen from screenshots. We have read twelve Bengaluru localities the way we read listings. Here is the table nobody's senior sent them.

Read the table like a fresher, not a founder
The rule that matters: live near your office CLUSTER, not your office. Bengaluru's traffic makes a 9-kilometre commute a lifestyle, and companies move you between buildings inside a cluster all the time. The city has three that hire freshers in bulk: Electronic City in the south, the ORR belt (Bellandur, Marathahalli, HSR's edge) in the east, and Whitefield's ITPL side. Pick the cluster your badge points at, then use the table to pick the most livable name inside cycling distance of it.
The pattern in the numbers
The places freshers get told to live sit at the bottom of the table: Electronic City's phases score 3.5 and 4.1, Whitefield Main 5.3, and it is the only locality in our set whose walkability drops below 10 (8.4; the town is drawn for cars). The pattern-buy is Marathahalli: a 7.9 day-to-day, better than fashionable Koramangala's 8.0 is given credit for, at an address with no shine and rents to match. And HSR Layout at 7.17 is the honest middle: ORR jobs on one side, an actual neighbourhood with mornings on the other.
The deposit, before it ambushes you
Bengaluru's famous custom: deposits quoted at ten months' rent, the highest norm in the country, usually negotiable to five or six if you ask plainly and are the tenant a landlord wants. For a first salary that number is the real constraint, worth more attention than the rent itself. Get the deposit, the deduction terms, and the return timeline in writing before anything moves; our field guide on token money applies here word for word, and so does the one on reading the agreement.
The first-year honest answer
Indiranagar's 9.4 day-to-day is the best in our Bengaluru set, and on a fresher's salary it mostly is not the first-year answer; it is what the second year is for. Year one is flatmates near the cluster, a deposit that does not eat your signing bonus, and a neighbourhood good enough that the city starts working on you. The table's job is to make sure "good enough" is a choice you made with numbers, not the default your HR's PG list made for you.
Method, and what this page can't decide
The scores are HabitatSignal's own locality reads: a great many signals, carefully sourced and carefully blended, scored 0–10 and refreshed periodically; this table is the snapshot of its stated date, and twelve localities is the sample we have read so far (Jayanagar, Malleshwaram, and the north beyond Hebbal are not in it yet). The scale is relative: a score positions a locality within its own city and against Indian metro cities in general, never on an absolute ruler. A 7 in Bengaluru is a Bengaluru 7. What no table can see is the specific PG, the specific flat, or the specific flatmates; the first two we read one listing at a time, the third is on you.
