Moving from Vadodara to Pune: a renter's field notes

You will recognise Pune before you have unpacked. The same unhurried mornings you had in Alkapuri, the same old-city-plus-cantonment bones, the university green running through it the way your banyans ran along R.C. Dutt Road. Of all the moves out of Vadodara, this is the one that feels least like emigration. Which is exactly why the one mistake this corridor produces is worth a page: most people moving for the IT parks sign a flat next to the IT parks, and our reads say the parks and the living sit on opposite ends of the city.

The east-west split, in numbers

Read the table top to bottom and a map draws itself: the two neighbourhoods above 8 are in the east (Viman Nagar, Koregaon Park), the ones below 6 are the western IT belt (Wakad, Hinjewadi), and Kharadi sits between in score because it sits between in kind, an IT park that grew a real neighbourhood around itself. The jobs cluster west; the living clusters east; rent is the bribe the west offers for accepting the difference. Now you can price the bribe.

The Hinjewadi question, answered honestly

If your badge says Hinjewadi, the default is to live in Hinjewadi or Wakad and donate the savings to the commute you avoided. Our reads put both at the bottom of the set: townships of towers where the evening is a food court, scored 4.23 and 5.61. The alternatives are real: Baner cuts the commute while scoring a step higher, and Kharadi's EON belt lets you keep an IT job with a 6.83 neighbourhood attached. For east-side offices the question never arises; Viman Nagar at 9.1 day-to-day is the easy answer.

What will feel familiar, and what won't

Familiar: the pace, the pride in old neighbourhoods, winters that justify a shawl, a food culture that takes breakfast seriously (misal will replace your fafda; resistance is temporary). Different: the two-wheeler tide at rush hour is denser than anything Vadodara runs, distances are longer than the city's reputation admits, and the monsoon is a genuine season, greener and wetter than home. Rent for the life you will live daily, not the office you visit; Pune punishes the reverse ordering with its traffic.

The small-sample honesty

We have read six Pune localities so far, against fifty-two in Mumbai, and this page says so plainly rather than pretending to a full map. Aundh, Kothrud, Magarpatta, and Kalyani Nagar are not in the table because we have not read them yet, not because they lost. The six we have read bracket the corridor's actual decision (IT belt versus east side) well enough to make the point; the map will fill in as the desk works.

Method, and what this page can't decide

The scores are HabitatSignal's own locality reads: carefully assembled signals for walkability, food and café depth, evening options, streetscape, and prestige, scored 0–10 and refreshed periodically; this table is the snapshot of its stated date. The scale is relative: a score positions a locality within its own city and against Indian metro cities in general, never on an absolute ruler. A 7 in Pune is a Pune 7. And no locality number can tell you whether the specific 2BHK in the specific tower deserves you; that is the reading we do one listing at a time.
